A 17-Hour Surgery by an Unqualified Surgeon Goes Severely Wrong

By admin | February 3, 2012

Some of the minor side effects associated with most plastic surgery procedures include swelling and bruising, as well as nausea and/or vomiting. These are normal and usually only evident in the early part of the recovery period. More serious complications, be it bleeding or infection, are rarer occurrences. Yet, even when a procedure is performed in the hands of an experienced, qualified surgeon, there is a chance that complications may develop afterwards.

As for one 28-year old woman from Dallas, Texas, her experience is being called a “plastic surgery nightmare.” As reported by Fox News Latino, she turned to Dr. Hector Oscar Molina of Irving for an arm lift and breast augmentation. According to the woman’s mother, her obese daughter just wanted to feel “pretty.” Unfortunately, after her 17 hour-operation, she ended up with open wounds and difficulty breathing. It was also reported that she woke up in pain during the implant procedure – her sister heard her screaming and ran in there only to see Dr. Molina continue operating while she was being shot up with drugs.

As reported by the Fox website, it is not the first time a patient has called 911 after undergoing plastic surgery at Molina Medical. This patient appears to be a victim to poor practice; Dr. Molina was not board certified, has only partial privileges at hospitals, and his facility is not accredited. It is not said whether the patient thoroughly researched the background of Dr. Molina, and if she visited any other doctors for consultations. Another factor that is extremely important, which was not addressed in this article: the 28-year old woman weighs 300 pounds. Her goal was about appearing more attractive, but what about becoming healthier?

Well-trained surgeons typically turn down obese patients when it comes to cosmetic surgery, because there is a health problem here that should not be ignored. Whether through diet, exercise, or even weight loss surgery, the matter of her size should be a matter to consider first. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), a surgeon should “evaluate your general health status and any pre-existing health conditions or risk factors.” One may wonder, then, did Dr. Molina do this?
