Too Young for Plastic Surgery?

By admin | June 4, 2010

Too Young for Plastic Surgery?Plastic surgery continues to attract a wide range of individuals, including men and women of all ages. But is there such a thing as being too young for plastic surgery? At the office of Dr. Wilcox, he and his staff cater to those who qualify as ideal candidates for specific procedures.

Considering that there is such pressure to meet the ideal standards of beauty, it is no wonder why many teenagers and young adults consider plastic surgery. However, it is to be known that cosmetic enhancements may not necessarily change a person’s outlook on life nor raise his or her self-confidence. Therefore, a teenager or young adult must be physically and psychologically healthy with realistic expectations; and according to the American Society for Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), “parental consent is required for all plastic surgery procedures performed on teens younger than 18.”

According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), the most commonly performed non-surgical procedures performed on individuals age 18 and younger are laser hair removal, microdermabrasion, and chemical peels. Ear surgery (“otoplasty“), and nose surgery (“rhinoplasty“) are the two top surgical procedures among this demographic.

Ear surgery can correct overly large ears (“macrotia“) or protruding ears occurring on one or both sides in varying degrees. Otoplasty can not only improve the shape, position or proportion of the ear, it can also correct a defect in the ear structure that was caused by injury or developed at birth. Nose surgery is another plastic surgery procedure that may benefit a younger patient. Individuals may opt for an alteration due to cosmetic needs or to help improve breathing obstructions.

Although breast augmentation didn’t make the top cosmetic surgery procedures performed among females, according to the ASAPS, many individuals in this age bracket continue to seek the help of Plano and Dallas, Texas’ Dr. Wilcox regarding breast enhancement. No matter the procedure(s) of choice, it is important that not only the patient does his or her research, it is imperative that the parent also be aware of all risks and potential complications that are associated with the desired procedure. “Not every teenager seeking plastic surgery is well suited for an operation. Teens must demonstrate emotional maturity and an understanding of the limitations of plastic surgery,” reports the ASPS.

Dr. Wilcox understands that each patient is unique and should receive an individualized evaluation prior to determining if he or she qualifies for plastic surgery.
